How did you come up with your username?

I’ll go first, it’s simple, the Internet is literally an open field where anyone can do whatever they want.

@lemmy

    Between Lemmy and Reddit, I’m a long time lurker, rarely a poster, especially as toxic as Reddit was I just found what I was looking for and moved along. Don’t mind me, I’m just:

    PassingThrough.

    Way back in the day when I was on another social media they banned my account and asked for identification because of my name at the timeso I made up a variation with this user name on a payslip in photoshop and they accepted it.

    I was playing on a MUD (early mmorpg thing by telnet) in 1994 and the creator wanted some of the core players to make characters as part of the plot. The game never went anywhere after that (it was called Kaspelheim) but the character I made was Pronell Mordini, perrin (otterlike humanoids) trademaster.

    I just kept using the name online since then. It’s never taken. But someone else did get pronell@gmail.com.

    My old username from reddit and HN was already taken and I couldn’t think of anything else I wanted to be called so I just picked some random characters like this:

    >>> import random
    >>> ''.join([random.choice("abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789") for x in range(5)])
    'e0qdk'

    I have that literally in my kbin profile, but it’s not on my reddthat one. (I think I tried to copy it there originally when I set up the account but ran into some issue with Lemmy’s UI – been long enough that I forget what exactly.)

    Been using for what feels like a lifetime, although I went through a few usernames during the late 90s early 00s and somewhere along the way BlueEther or a derivative just stuck

    Twas foretold in the stars that one day a raccoon would arise, one of debatable taste, ethics and moral code. Many eons later, I took on that mantle and ascended to my true calling

    I read an article about an ape that had bad flatulence.

    I grow stuff (mostly peppers and tomatoes for a while now, but I’m adding squash to hand pollinate and strawberries this year) in deep water culture hydro, which involves a 5 gallon bucket of nutrient water and an air pump creating bubbles. Super basic setup geared toward “permanent” plants that keep producing indefinitely, or big plants like weed. Works well since complex and long-term don’t mix well for me. Way way back in the day on the forum I used to frequent, dwc setups were called bubble buckets.

    And I like monkeys, I relate to them.

    However doing a quick internet search shows that apparently there’s an anonymous recreational drug information page under the same name (among numerous other things) so that’s a bit awkward I’ve got nothing against drugs, but nothing to do with that site either.

    It’s my first name and a single syllable of my last name. This is my standard user account that all my family and friends know, so if they want to find me online, they know what to look for.

    I used to do private user accounts so I could post things that I didn’t want people in my life to find, but then I realized I just didn’t care to use them. I stay true to myself, even online. Anything I post is what I would happily share with anyone in my life anyway, so there’s no reason for me to maintain multiple accounts anymore.

    Also, I’m retired now, so it’s not like I need to watch what I say online. I don’t have to fear my boss finding less-than-professional social media content I’ve posted. My friends are all still working and they get really nervous about broadcasting our chats, like when I’m trying to stream our gaming sessions on Twitch. They sometimes vent about their work, and they’re afraid of their employer finding it. (BTW, I don’t record our game sessions.)

    One friend in particular will ditch our game nights completely if I mention it’s going to be livestreamed. I live halfway across the country from him and I don’t even know his employer, but he’s paranoid they’ll somehow stumble across my Twitch stream and recognize his voice or something. I’m lucky if I get 2 viewers all night long, so I’m pretty sure he’s safe.

    First wow character. Not sure how I came up with it. I knew I wanted it in “two parts” so I could name all my wow characters the same way: rutrum, vinrum, seprumand many others Im sure. Havent logged into world of warcraft in many many years.
