Would this more intricate engineering result in a noticeably better product for the average guitarist? Would it just be a niche curiosity for audiophiles and engineers?
This is AskSCIENCE so it’s not surprising that you would approach the musings from this perspective.
But OPs idea is about the intersection of science and art. I think the question is really: Would some of these ideas result in an output signal that was controllable in a new way?
Imo this modification would empower an artist to interact with their guitar in a novel and creative way? Do I think we’ll see mass adoption, no, but I think there are definitely people out there that would be interested in playing a guitar with pickups like this. Even if it’s just part of their creative process.
I think OP is interested in the role of oscillation planes because with an acoustic guitar, exciting a string parallel (lateral) to the guitar vs perpendicular to the guitar has a perceptible difference in tone.
OP believes that this difference isn’t captured by common electric guitar pickups.
From what I’ve read in this thread common pickups measure the speed of the string, basically considering both planes of vibration the same. But an acoustic guitar responds more to the perpendicular oscillations than the lateral oscillations. (Because the perpendicular plane oscillations tends to work the bridge/soundboard, and push air towards and away from the sound hole).
Although I agree that ultimately the string’s oscillation is pretty much circular/cylindrical/bi-conical, but I suspect there is a significant transient effect that could be explored/exploited with redesigned pickups.
I’m also curious if it would be possible to use a string with a [section of] non-circular cross section to allow the [creation and] detection of torsional vibrations.
Remember the Alarmo
Go to the hardware store and get some pex tubing, and a shark bite union fitting.
Cut the tubing to the size you want, use the fitting to close the loop. The fitting can be removed by pressing on the ring around where the tubing goes in. They’re may be a tool that will make this easier.
So you can put all your chokers on the ring, then rotate the one you want to the opening
Pretty interesting!
The Wikipedia article has a ton of info. This magazine article which Wikipedia references is imo a better introduction https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/technology/2022/cochineal-red-dye-bugs-moves-lab
Ateam has managed to bioengineer a fungi to produce it, but with very low yields. Another team has managed to get e coli to produce it, they estimated that a 100,000 L fermenter could produce the same amount as a hectare of land.
100,000L is 100m^3 which is a cube with 4.7m side length. ~15’x15’x15’ or uhh ~~~the size of 4 F150s.
Edit to add: a hectare is 100m x 100m ie ~100 yards x 100 yards.
If he comes back to the North, he would be tortured&executed with his family.
Are you basing this statement on anything other than your impression that the North Korean regime is cruel for the sake of being cruel, and everyone in the military and government is incompetent?
It might be true, but it’s also possible that the North Koreans would use it as the obvious propaganda coup it is and send him on speaking tours all over the country/world.
It’s also quite possible that he’s mentally unwell and isn’t making rational choices. Or that he’s trying to escape an abusive situation.
Don’t get me wrong, the North Korean government is not good, I’m just saying that the assumption he’ll be tortured and executed underestimates them.
PS. When you say “comes back” it means that you are in that place. So your sentence implies that you’re in North Korea. I’m sure you meant “goes back”.
I know nothing about any of this, but could one put the epoxy on a large flat surface and then put the wood on top face down?
Probably wouldn’t work /shrug
Yeah that sounds like what was explained to me
I needed to upgrade my modem because the isp capped the speed of docsis 3.0 modems to like 75Mbps. I remember being quite upset because I was previously getting 125Mbps service on the same modem. I seem to recall there was a quasi legit technical reason for it though.
It’s not, but it seems Argentina doesn’t think people should be allowed to own their phones.
in bc we have two tier pricing, the first X kilowatthours per month is I think 0.08CAD (~0.05USD), the second is 0.15CAD (~0.11USD)
Our power mostly comes from hydroelectric dams, but we wheel and deal it interprovincially so within the course of a day we’ll spend some time importing and some time exporting which gives us lower rates, and lets other places run more efficiently (ie Fewer gas turbines)
THPS 1+2 (the HD remake) is excellent but they decided not to do a THPS3+4 remake. Presumably due to low numbers. BUT online is broken. What I mean by broken is that you basically can’t log in to the server if your console is connected to the internet through a router. As far as I know Activision never acknowledged that failure. Do you think this problem might have hurt sales/microtransaction revenue?
If they know these people are active criminals they will have no problem citing just cause for arrest and search.
I live in Canada, our gun rules are different than the USA. This week in my city some charges against a dangerous criminal were dropped because the police had a “flagrant disregard for charter rights” (according to the judge) (oir charter rights are similar to American civil rights)
They searched him improperly, and found a loaded, illegal gun. Charges dismissed. If they had handled it properly they could have made the charges stick. What a waste of everyone’s time. Police didn’t respect his rights because they don’t respect my rights.
The water in my community has poison added to it by my local government. It’s a poison so heinous its usage is banned in war. It affects the clarity and taste of the water. No matter how many letters I write they are totally unwilling to stop chlorinating the water. It’s outrageous!
Is there a way to set up patreon for any ad free website I browse?
Could my browser have some sort of cryptographically signed cookie that would let ad-free websites deduct 1-5 cents from my browsing account?
Website could check for the cookie before loading the ads?
Has this been tried?
Is that what we call Beaver Belly in Canada? (from drinking contaminated water?)
Yeah I get that there isn’t much direct evidence of Jesus. But when you say “Saul had his own thing going on, which wasn’t entirely popular” aren’t you referring to his persecution of Christians?
I thought my question was pretty simple: if Jesus didn’t exist, where did the early Christians (that Saul was persecuting) come from?
We have letters from Paul, because he sent them to other Christian communities. Where did those communities come from?
My question was in regard to the part of the comment:
{The Birth of Jesus} …if it happened at all, which is up for debate…
I’m always intrigued by this sort of hypothesis, can you recommend a good link to an alternative explanation for the early church?
Like I get that early Christians worked in a lot (LOT) of existing mythology to make Christianity palatable/ relatable to various local groups. But where could the early Christians have come from if not a Jesus like figure?
I think it’s a neat idea. I’ve responded to a few other commenters with my thoughts too, so check the thread.
